External, highly visible tags of different shape, colors, and size are printed with a code to identify the fish and sometimes include additional information such as a contact address or phone number to contact the original taggers. These tags are most commonly anchored in the muscle of the dorsal fin with metal wires or plastic anchors. Since different manufacturers of external tags reuse the same code set over time, recovered tags to must be sent in.
